Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Return

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
